Child Selection

A potential family and child are usually referred to Bright Start by a community leader, employer or school.

Assessment criteria
  1. Child and family assessment
  2. School interviews
  3. In-depth child and family screening
  4. Employer reference
  5. Home visit
  6. School place confirmed
  7. Donor paperwork completed

The suitability of the family and child are the most important aspect of the selection process. It is fundamental to the success of the programme.

Bright Start considers 7 key criteria
1. Age

Bright Start prefers to take on a child at nursery or pre-school age where integration and language development is easier.

2. Location

The child and parents should be residing in Hout Bay.

3. Parental Support

Parent’s should show commitment and ability to support the child.

4. Home Environment

The child should live with a family member in a happy, secure and safe environment.

5. Household Income

The combined income should be sufficient for parents to make a monthly contribution (R250) to their child’s education. However, all families qualifying for the programme would require financial assistance to send their child to a private school.

6. Health

Bright Start prefers to take on healthy children with a maximum learning ability that would be able to complete a full educational career with prospects for a ‘Brighter Future’. Donor funds would not cover medical costs.

7. Learning Ability

Consider factors such as language capability, previous learning environments, behavioral problems and how the child responds to authority.
