The South African school system is divided into three categories.
- Public schools (Non-fee Government Schools)
- Private schools (Fee Paying)
- Quintile 5 Schools (Former Model C schools, partly subsidised)
Public schools in South Africa are grossly understaffed and under-resourced. Statistics show that they are increasingly over-crowded, and each year the Grade 12 pass rate drops lower and lower.
Quintile 5 or Model C schools came about as a result of the government’s Decentralisation Policy, where the school has more autonomy and is only partially government funded.
Private schools are growing in South Africa, as good teaching staff look for better positions and teaching environments.
The key qualification that learners work towards is Grade 12 – which is equivalent to A Levels or HSC.
Participating Schools
There are many schools in the area ranging from nursery and pre-school, to junior and senior school. As these schools are close to various communities and neighbourhoods, children living in Hout Bay can easily walk to school or find transportation.
We have selected schools that are racially balanced, have suitable aftercare facilities for working parents and have shown commitment to the Programme.
With this in mind, we have partnered with the 4 schools listed above in the Hout Bay area.
