Selection
Selection | Support | Schools | SustainabilitySelecting the right family is critical to the success of the Programme! These factors form the basis of the assessment:
1. Age
We prefer to take on a child at nursery or pre-school age when integration and language development is easier.
2. Location
The children should be South African and living close to a participating Bright Start School.
3. Parental Support
We assess the parents’ commitment and ability to support the child.
4. Home Environment
The child should live with his/her parents, in a secure and safe environment.
5. Household Income
The combined income should be sufficient enough for parents to make a monthly contribution to their child’s education. However, all families qualifying for the Programme would require financial assistance to send their child to a private school.
6. Health
We prefer to take on healthy children with a maximum learning ability that would be able to complete a full educational career with prospects for a brighter future. Donor funds do not cover medical costs.
7. Learning Ability
We consider factors such as language capability, previous learning environments, behavioural problems and how the child responds to authority.
Children currently in the Programme have been referred by employers in the community, schools and crèches where the child and parents are seen to be potential candidates.
Our selection process:
- Child and family assessment
- School interviews
- In-depth child and family screening
- Employer reference
- Home visit
- School placing confirmation
- Donor paperwork completed
